Karina Talamantes says she was at the forefront of public outreach efforts during the pandemic. “I have long prided myself on the ability to wear different hats interchangeably in my roles as an elected official, public servant, and business owner, but in 2020 I wore only one hat; nonpartisan community leader,” she wrote in her 40 under 40 application.

For some, equity can look like simply meeting students and families where they are. Sacramento COE Vice President Karina Talamantes said that being bilingual has helped her ease the fear and anxiety of vaccinations for the Latino community during a March 11 vaccine clinic. “My joke of the day was ‘es tu pasaporte para dar abrazos’ after they received their vaccination card,” she tweeted (‘es tu pasaporte para dar abrazos’ essentially translates to ‘it’s your passport to give hugs.’).

“It’s all hands-on deck,” said Karina Talamantes, Ashby’s chief of staff and a member of the Sacramento County Board of Education. Talamantes was a driving force behind the creation of the clinic and has been doing plenty of outreach on her own.

In one car that pulled up, the driver said in Spanish that he had learned about the clinic through a flyer in the La Superior supermarket that Talamantes had left.

“She went to the meat markets, she went to every Spanish language grocery store, the consulate — everything,” Ashby said of Talamantes.

The city also hopes it will encourage more entrepreneurs to open their own business.

Her family has been in the agriculture industry for many years and owned a restaurant. Talamantes was finally able to open a food truck with her brother.

She hopes others will get the same opportunity.
